أهم ما في نجران أنها تغدق على زائرها بشعور المكتشف الأول، وأنه أول إنسان يأتي إليها من العالم الآخر. ولا يلبث أن يعرف الحقيقة بنفسه، بأنه مجرد عابر مثل ملايين قبله عبروا من هنا، وسجلوا مجيئهم في أسفار حضارة خالدة في الجبل والوادي والصحراء، عبر العصور والحقب التاريخية الضاربة في التاريخ، لكنهم تركوا للزائر دهشة الاكتشاف، ولذة المعرفة الأولى.
ولا يعرف الكثيرون عن نجران (أقصى الجنوب الغربي للسعودية) أنها صرّة تاريخ الجزيرة العربية، ومهد حضارات وثقافات ضاربة في القدم، وتضج بالاختلاف والتنوع والتضاد. وتنسب تسميتها في إحدى الروايات المتضاربة الى (نجران بن زيدان بن سبأ) الذي يقال إنه أول من نزل في موقعها وأسسها، تماما كما أسس مدينة الإسكندرية الإسكندر الأكبر المقدوني.

ودانت منطقة نجران الى أمم سادت ثم بادت حتى دخلت في البلاد السعودية على يد الملك المؤسس عبد العزيز آل سعود سنة 1350هـ. وتشير المصادر التاريخية الى أنها خضعت لدولة معين ثم حمّير (من عام 115 ق. م حتى عام 340م) بحسب شهادة المؤرخ الإغريقي (سترابون) كما غزاها الرومان في عهد أغسطس 24 ق.م عقب احتلالهم لمصر، حيث قاموا بتدميرها.

وتعد نجران أحد الأماكن القليلة التي ورد ذكرها في القرآن الكريم. في المدينة التي كانت مسرحا لحادثة أول محرقة في التاريخ البشري، وخلدت آيات الذكر الحكيم قصة أصحاب الأخدود الذين كانوا يسكنون في هذه المنطقة في مطلع سورة البروج.

وتنتاب الزائر عند بوابة مدينة الاخدود التاريخية، رعشة خوف تسري في أطراف جسده. ويجد نفسه بلا إرادة يقدم رجلا ويؤخر اخرى، عندما يخالجه شعور طاغ وكأنه يشتم رائحة شياط اللحم البشري المحروق في هذا المكان الذي شهد اول محرقة في التاريخ البشري.المؤكد ان ما سوف يراه الزائر لهذا المكان يمثل أقل من 1 في المائة مما هو مطمور تحت الارض وتحت اشجار الاراك المتشابكة، وهي أوابد مطمورة تحتاج الى سلسلة طويلة من اعمال التنقيب والحفر لكشف فصول غامضة من تاريخ هذه المنطقة، الذي يبدو جليا ان المعروف منه حتى الآن لا يتجاوز العنوان.

والملاحظ أن الصخور هنا مهيبة ضخمة، ومقصوصة بعناية بعضها يحمل رسوما ظاهرة ونقوشا بأحرف كبيرة كأنها تستصرخ القادم للتوقف وفك رموزها لسماع حكايتها المؤلمة. وتنتشر اشجار الاراك في هذا المكان بشكل يثير الدهشة والتساؤل، ورائحتها الغريبة تذكرك بروائح القبور وأجداث الموتى، وهي تمتد لعشرات الامتار على الارض كأنها تحاول ان تخفي جزءًا من بشاعة المذبحة تحت غصونها المتشابكة وأوراقها شديدة الاخضرار. لكنها تعكس ذكرى النار الموقدة في ثمارها الشديدة الاحمرار المعلقة على أغصانها وكأنها شواظ من جمر ملتهب، تذكر القادم بقصة اخدود النار.

وقد كانت نجران محل أطماع ملوك المماليك جنوب الجزيرة العربية حيث تعرضت الى الكثير من الغزوات بغية السيطرة على خيراتها الزراعية والاستفادة من دورها التجاري وموقعها الاستراتيجي. ودخل الإسلام الى نجران في السنة العاشرة من الهجرة عندما أعلن بنو الحارث بن كعب إسلامهم أيام الرسول الخاتم صلى الله عليه وسلم. وبعد أن توالت الأحداث على نجران وضعف بنو الحارث بن كعب دخلت قبائل همدان الى نجران بحكم قرب موقعها منها، حتى أصبحت قبائل (يام) كلها في نجران منذ نهاية القرن الثالث.

من على ارتفاع 28 الف قدم تبدو نجران وكأنها شبه جزيرة وسط محيط من الجبال يطوقها من ثلاث جهات، وتفتح ذراعيها من ناحية الشرق لتستوعب كل اسرار الربع الخالي اكبر صحراء جافة في العالم.

في نجران.. ابحث عن الإنسان أولا لتعرف ماذا يعني التاريخ. فالنجرانيون يؤكدون للقادم أن (الحي أبقى من الميت) وان الانسان هو الذي يصنع التاريخ ويضع بصماته عليه لا العكس. وتتضح رغبتهم الدفينة في التعريف عن مدينتهم التاريخية بعاداتهم وتقاليدهم وتنوع وغزارة موروثاتهم الحضارية، على انهم يؤكدون أيضا ودائما، أمام كل زائر للمنطقة، ان مدينتهم هي اكثر مناطق الجزيرة العربية توفرا في الآثار. فهي مهد حضارات وديانات على مر الزمان، والتاريخ والواقع المشاهد يؤكدان صحة ذلك. وحيثما قلب الزائر عينه سيجد أمامه العديد من الجهات السياحية التي يندر لها مثيل في غير هذا المكان. فنجران تملك كل البيئات السياحية الممكنة لقضاء أفضل وقت، فهناك الآثار التي لا حصر لها كالأخدود وكاتدرائية الأسود العنسي (كعبة نجران)، وبقايا سد (قوم عاد) وغيرها، وهناك الغابات والمروج الخضراء التي تنساب بينها جداول الماء العذبة، كغابة (نهوقة) أو غابة (سقام) أكبر المتنزهات الطبيعية في السعودية. إذ تقدر مساحتها بحوالي أربعة ملايين متر مربع، ومتنزه (الغثمة) المتميز بكثرة أشجاره الطبيعية المتنوعة واعتدال الجو تبعا لوقوعه على المرتفعات الجبلية الشاهقة. لكن للسياحة في صحراء الربع الخالي والرحلات البرية فيها خصوصا في موسم الربيع متعة لا تضاهيها أي متعة. فبالإضافة الى متعة التزلج والمسامرة على الرمال الحمراء، والكثبان التي ترتفع كالجبال الشاهقة وتنساب كأمواج البحر، ثم الالتقاء بمجتمع البادية وأهلها البسطاء ذوي العادات العربية الأصيلة الذين يمنحونك من مرحهم، ونوادر .قصصهم، وحكايات الصحراء وأساطيرها، والكرم العربي الأصيل الذي يغدقونه على ضيفهم في خيامهم وبيوت الشعر القريبة منابع الماء والكلأ. ويحرص السياح الأوروبيون على قصد الصحراء لقضاء جزء من إجازتهم في هذا المكان الساحر الذي يعد بحق مفتاحا لصناعة سياحية صحراوية لا تتوفر في كثير مناطق العالم الآن.
