Videography Issue good

Videography Issue good ، Videography Issue good

I know this is the photog forum but I thought there might be some videographers out there that would have insight on a problem I’m having.

I have a Sony PD170 miniDV camcorder. Recently I’ve been having an issue with major pixilation (mostly on the right side of the screen) during playback/importing. The pixilation does not show up while I’m monitoring the recording, but afterwards.

Another peculiarity is that the video seems to get better as the tape goes on. In the beginning of the tape the playback is awful, it slowly gets better until the end when you don’t notice any at all.

1. I’m not using tapes more than once.
2. This has happened on multiple tapes, from different sources (so I didn’t get like a "bad box" of tapes or anything…)
3. I’ve used a head cleaning tape, did not seem to help.

I’ve done a little research and the only thing I can come up with is that the exit roller is misaligned? That would make sense if it’s a tension thing because as the tape rolled, the exit roller would have more tension and therefore fix the problem.

Not really sure how to fix that. This camera belongs to my office, and at the moment we’re trying to work out the details on a contract with someone to do maintenance on our video equipment (It’s a state government office, therefore we have no money and a lot of red tape for things).

Have any of you had this problem before? Any ideas on what to do to troubleshoot until we can get a professional to work on it?
