Not from the standpoint of the photographer, but as the consumer…

As one or two may know – we terminated the contract with our first wedding photographer because we both (photog and I and fiancé) mutually agreed he was not the right fit for us.

So we shop around more, and hire another studio. I felt very confident. I still do – kind of…

So we are having our albums and shit made – but as I go back and look at our latest engagement photos, I realize just how much more thought and effort I put into my work compared to the god damned photographers I see out there and it’s frustrating. We are paying these people thousands of dollars, and I am still worrying about their ability to pull off what we want. Maybe I shouldn’t be – but I am…

For what our latest photographers are doing and charging, I should be charging 10 grand to shoot a wedding.

I was called into my boss’s office last Friday. I’m being laid off as of the first of the year. I knew this was coming as we had discussed when I might retire, but I didn’t know when. I was hoping to make it to next October but they want to use my position to hire a writer. My value as a producer/director/cameraman has been limited as we transgressed into more multi-media jobs.

That’s the good news.

Because now I’ll be free to grow my photography business without any constraints.

My kids are grown and out on their own.

My home will be paid for and I can retire debt free.

I have all the camera **** in the world.

I have my health.

Life is good.

I’m just about finished my Photo BS degree at the college I work at… Taking it 2 classes a semester, just for kicks…

So we have this portfolio class…. Today was the final…

During the semester, the committee meets with you and discusses your photos, recommends changes, gives you alternative ideas, etc…

They gave me a bunch of shitty little suggestions like remove this little tree branch, see how this looks black and white, etc…

I pretty much disregarded them, so they called me on it… Spent the first half of the critique telling me how i’m arrogant and think i’m too good to listen to anyone else, blah blah blah…

Then they told me my portfolio was the best out of all of the classes this semester, gave me an A, and asked me to mat one of the pictures for the school’s gallery…

And while she is learning some good basics, I can’t help but think that she is also being mislead.

She’s finally shooting in Manual and learned to set her camera’s focus point to center.

But she then told me that "You know what I need? I need those lens with the red ring on them! My teacher said I need those cause they are the best!"

She has an XTi. I told her that before she spends a fortune on lens get a flash.

It’s funny too cause of the way she describes what she learned. Middle aged Vietnamese woman.

She told me this morning "When the hole in the camera is big the person is clear but the background is all blurry!"

So my wife started doing photography a couple months ago – she’s to the point where she’s doing free photo shoots/photo editing for family members and friends and everyone tells her she’s doing great.
