For the time I’ve been working at a portrait studio, I’ve come to a realization that body doesn’t mean everything. They use a 40D w/ a 28-200mm and a 400 watt strobe… and still have enough business and client-ale to bring in revenue. So that got me thinking…

"Do I really need to upgrade my XT anyway?"

The answer, no.

I have 2 batteries already so I can get a battery grip, I’ve got a 8mp camera (studio uses 10) and can get off camera lighting with some really good glass. I don’t know what the infatuation was all about when I THOUGHT I needed a bigger body with higher megapixels. It seems silly now, I don’t shoot sports, I haven’t done a concert in a while (at night) so FPS isn’t a big deal. I’ve tried to get away from noise also…

And 8 megapixels, with a sharp lens, should produce good sizes, should anyone need to print. However, since it’s all digital, it may not matter all that much.

Was talking to Clint the other night, and he mentioned he had entered a contest on Top Knots, suggested I do it too… so I said why not. After going through a bunch of pictures with Clint, settled on Kevin & Nicole’s pic on the beach to enter into the contest. So, now, I need votes.

Votes require a valid email and the rules are as follows

I was originally looking at a starter DSLR like the Pentax K-x or Nikon D3100, but it’s really going to be for taking pictures/video of our baby girl who is only a few months from arriving. So I’ve decided on a point & shoot camera I can have readily available and stick in my pocket and so on.

Things that are important to me:
• Above average low-light and indoor shooting
• HD video
• Respectable battery life
• Enough manual settings to give me some control when I have time to forego Auto mode

Things that are not important to me:
• Price
• Specific brands

I’ve been doing some jobs over the last few years and have been always paid using PayPal.

Lately, my income from this hobby has been increasing. Some logo/branding jobs range from $200 to over a $1000.
Most of my prior income (logo contests) was used to buy things online: computers and other equipment so I hardly ever transfered any to my bank account.

But now I have quite a bit of money sitting my PayPal account and want to send it to my bank account to invest in other things. Wouldn’t my bank be suspicious of me sending large amounts of money into my account?

I’m currently registering a business name and making a new website. I’ve been dealing more with local clients and need to start taxing this stuff.
I have actually set aside about $2k just in case I get screwed over later on.

Would anybody be able to tell me how I should go about accounting for all my transactions? Also, if I win a contest (99designs or whatever), how do I go about taxing it?

My brother and his wife are pregnant and expecting soon. They already booked a photography shoot for January but due to complications with their unborn son, they can no longer stay in Tampa for the delivery and have to stay in Gainesville, FL until the birth + 3 months after- they are leaving for Gainesville in a week. It’s extremely expensive and they cant afford to take the photos any more. This is where my problem comes in…

My brother is begging me to take the maternity pictures for them. However, my issues are:
– I am not a photographer by any means
– I have a meh camera (Canon Rebel XTi)
– .. with a kit lens only
– No ****. Just a tripod
– They live in a town home with no real backyard, so I have limited space but I’m sure I can move stuff around
– and most importantly: absolutely no experience

I take photos for fun and I had ONE high school photo class and ONE film photography class in college. I think I can manage my way around this with enough research. I’m not amazing by any means but I’m not completely retarded with a camera, if that means anything. 😮

I’m clueless. I really need some tips, advice, or just examples of what I can do to make this work. :hs:

They are going through a really rough time and although they understand I can’t take professional looking photos for them, they don’t mind and honestly, I just want to help my brother out. Any input would be much appreciated. 🙂 Thanks!

Trying to find a specific camera mount that clamps onto your light stand. Best way to describe this is imagine having your light stand setup and having a clamped bar extended to the right or left with a camera mount on the end. It wouldn’t be more than 8-12" off the light stand.

Any suggestions/thoughts? I’ve been looking mostly at the SB-600, but I’m not sure if the 800 is HUGE step up worth the extra money. Right now I’m not doing a ton of indoor stuff but if I end up expanding a bit I don’t want to have to upgrade in a year.

So, during that maternity shoot I just did they wanted to do some that were silhouettes on a white background. I couldn’t get the paper rolled out far enough for them to stand on it, and get enough seperation to light the BG white… so I decided to do it in post… I tried doing it all white, and didn’t really like how it looked, so I just cleaned up the end of the paper where it was taped to the floor… what does OTAP think?

As an in-house designer, I find it difficult to price my work. I have come across a freelance opportunity, but am unsure of my estimate and would appreciate input.

Project scope:
(1) logo redesign/*******en
(1) logo design
business card template
stationery
(1) plate designation template (think simple design)

I have estimated $2,800 – $3,200 for this job… how does that rate?

(Company size is small, perhaps $25mil in sales per year. Located in New Jersey)
