So here’s the deal. Got into photography as a hobby years ago when my son was born. Got some amazing shots of him with a used D70, saving us some money from studios, but then things got tight and I had to sell my whole rig.

Four years later, with twins on the way, I’m looking to get back in. Because I know the D70 well and it’s a bit discounted because of age, I want another one. Looking at ebay now. However, I really don’t have the money for multiple lenses. I will basically be taking pictures of my newborn twins and my 4yo son, both candids and studio shots with the lighting equipment I still have (for Christmas cards and whatnot).

Figure I have about $400 to spend on body and lens. Would I be ok with the kit lens, or should I go for a 50mm prime or something? I did love my 50mm 1.8…

Selling canon 50mm 1.8 – $90+ship
canon 28mm 2.8 w/ tiffen uv filter; no caps though- $170+ship
the 50mm is honestly basically new, shot with it once and hated it on crop.
28mm is also excellent quality, no scratches on body or lens, gotta sell this because of fucking books :wtc:

anyways im shipping from pa but no idea what shipping costs but depending on where you are ill try to find the cheapest way to post it from my school post office

what do you guys think is the best ~30mm prime or zoom lens for canon crop body? sharpest iq etc that is under $500?
i have the 50mm and 28mm 2.8 but looking to get a lens that isnt ridiculously budget since its been some time since i got my camera and still holding interest
honestly i want to sell the 50mm because i dont use it at all if someone wants to buy the 1.8 that was used once…

since im looking for a general walk around lens im thinking zoom would be more practical but i really like shooting with primes more so what does otap think?
im fine with used if its within budget

Greetings, this is my first post in OTAP

a brief history of myself, i bought an nex-3 when they first came out for my first non-point-and-shoot camera; I purchased it at best buy, and when it broke I sent it away for repairs. I never got it back, and they gave me store credit, and now here i am with a t2i. I’ve got the standard 18-55 3.5-5.6. I’m aware I have an entry level camera but that’s okay with me, i’m just a hobbyist. I was looking into buying myself a faster lens this holiday season, what would you guys recommend?

I ordered it to replace the kit 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 non-IS kit lens that came with my Canon DSLR.

It utilizes FLD glass elements that they claim to be "comparable to fluorite". It doesn’t allow full time manual, but other than that, do you guys have something you don’t like about it?

It was $600 new from an authorized dealer. I also had the option of getting a Tamron with identical range, IS and similar pricing. I would have preferred the Canon 17-55mm F2.8 IS, but that is like $900.

I have a Canon 75-300mm lens (non IS – its about 5 years old) and i noticed it has been acting up recently. Whenever i try to zoom it jams a little or it was a little harder to turn recently. I was messing with the lens and just zooming in and out and somehow the casing lost traction with the body of the lens. What i mean by this is – I can move the zoom case but it wont zoom in or out – the case seem to lose contact with the body.

I tried to fix it by trying to hold it down and moving it but now it’s stuck on 1 zoom and it automatic focuses sometimes. Anyone know if i can open up the camera case and try to fix the problem? I took it to a Canon care center (i’m out of the country atm and they said it’ll take 10-15 days to fix) but by that time i’ll be out of the country and they wouldnt even tell me a price since they have to ship it to the company hq in the country.

Anyone ever have this problem b4 with this lens?

tl;dr – the camera case moves but it wont zoom. it lose traction with the actual zoom body of the lens.

btw to make matters worse- my kit lens gives me an ERR 99 all the time but i saw some tutorials online to remedy the issue which i’ll try later such as clean the golden sensor of the lens with an eraser.

Which would you choose? I will rarely use it, but need it for certain shots.

What I’m looking at is extension tubes like the Kenko’s or a macro lens like the Tamron 90mm.

I hesitate on the Tamron, because I doubt I’d use that lens for anything other than macro. And can’t justify spending $450 for a lens that’s going to sit 98% of the time.

I don’t know a lot about extension tubes, so I don’t know if they’re even worth bothering with.
